Relieving the Symptoms of Enlarged Prostate

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is one of the most common ailments among men, especially as they age. NewYork-Presbyterian Westchester offers the tests needed to diagnose BPH, including urodynamic testing to assess urine flow and cystoscopy to assess the prostate and bladder in select patients. Our urologists offer the full range of treatments for BPH and tailor your care to your individual needs. Medication and lifestyle changes (modifying fluid intake, reducing caffeine, making dietary changes) are often the first options. When these are not sufficient to relieve your symptoms, we offer surgery and advanced technologies to reduce the size of the prostate, such as:

  • Minimally invasive prostate surgery. Our surgeons are skilled in a variety of bladder outlet approaches to improve urinary flow
  • Laser prostatectomy. We perform photoselective vaporization of the prostate (PVP) and holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) to remove prostate tissue and relieve symptoms
  • Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). During TURP, the urologist cuts and removes the prostate tissue that is blocking the urine from exiting the bladder
  • Other technologies. Our urologists frequently assess novel and minimally invasive treatments for BPH, such as UroLift®, and can discuss the pros and cons of the different options with you

Advanced Care for Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

Our doctors focus on determining the cause of ED and offer personalized treatment strategies based on the diagnostic evaluation. We prescribe oral medications and also specialize in treatments for men who do not respond to pills. These treatments include:

  • Penile injection therapy, a non-surgical option that is often effective for men who do not respond to oral medication
  • Penile prosthesis surgery, a permanent solution for moderate to severe erectile dysfunction. We have exceptional experience performing penile prosthesis surgery.
  • Vacuum erection devices
  • Penile rehabilitation after prostate cancer surgery

Treatment of Peyronie's Disease

Peyronie's disease is a common disorder in which scar tissue develops within the walls of the “erection chambers” in the penis, resulting in loss of penile stretch that appears as changes in the shape of the erect penis. These shape changes, such as curvature or penile indentations, can be painful and quite distressing. NewYork-Presbyterian Westchester is home to one of the few urologists in New York who is an expert in the treatment of Peyronie's disease. He offers:

  • Comprehensive diagnostic assessment to assess penile shape changes and erectile function, which is a critical first step towards effective treatment
  • Intralesional therapy (injections) using verapamil or Xiaflex to stabilize and improve penile shape without surgery
  • Penile reconstructive surgery for stable-phase Peyronie’s disease

Managing Low Testosterone

We understand how testosterone deficiency can affect your mood and sexual desire and impair your quality of life. Our urologists are experts in the diagnosis and management of low testosterone. They offer testosterone replacement therapies such as topical therapies, short- and long-acting injections, and oral therapies for younger men who wish to preserve their fertility.

Diagnosing and Treating Male Infertility

Our urologists are specially trained in the evaluation and treatment of male infertility. Men contribute to infertility in about half of affected couples, and treating the male partner is often critical for a couple to achieve their reproductive goals. We offer comprehensive evaluations as well as medical and surgical therapies for male infertility. For men who have surgery, our team employs state-of-the-art microsurgical approaches for varicocele surgery, sperm retrieval surgery, and vasectomy reversal. Specifically, we offer the following surgeries:

  • Subinguinal microsurgical varicocelectomy
  • Microdissection testicular sperm extraction (microTESE)
  • Microsurgical epididymal sperm aspiration (MESA) ligation or varicocelectomy to treat enlarged veins in the scrotum
  • Vasectomy reversal to restore the flow of sperm through the vas deferens
  • Transurethral resection of the ejaculatory duct to relieve an obstruction in the passageways through which sperm travel from the testicles
