Pilates is a method of gentle exercises that help to strengthen, stretch, and balance the body, with particular attention to the core muscles (the abdomen and back). It is named after Joseph Pilates, who created the technique in the 1920s. Pilates is done with precision and purposeful, slow movements. At Integrative Health and Wellbeing at NewYork-Presbyterian, we offer one-on-one mat Pilates instruction.

The Benefits of Pilates

When you practice Pilates, you may experience benefits such as:

  • Stronger core muscles
  • Better stability
  • Improved posture
  • Better balance
  • More flexibility

By strengthening your core, Pilates can be very helpful for preventing and relieving back pain.

Personalized Pilates Sessions

Our Pilates instructor is certified through the Physical-Mind Institute and The Pilates Method Alliance. She will discuss your medical history and your current health with you, and customize your Pilates exercises to meet your needs and address your symptoms. Your Pilates sessions can be modified if you are new to the practice, have osteoporosis, or are recovering from surgery. Through specific movements, you can attain better control of your body, as well as a heightened awareness of your own individual movement patterns.
