About the Program

Emergency medicine residency training

Several doctors using computers in a libraryThe Emergency Medicine Residency Training Program is a categorical PGY 1-3 teaching program that has been carefully designed to maximize the resident's opportunity to succeed.

The program's goal is to graduate emergency medicine-trained residents who will become leading clinicians, educators, researchers and administrators. It boasts a strong and motivated faculty—all diplomats of the American Board of Emergency Medicine—who have a variety of interests, including clinical care, teaching, administration, research, point-of-care ultrasonography and pre-hospital care.

Each resident is paired with a faculty member who is responsible for ensuring that the resident achieves the goals and objectives set forth in the curriculum. A comprehensive training program combining clinical experience and didactic presentations provide the resident with progressively graded clinical, administrative, and teaching responsibility throughout the duration of the program.

Didactic teaching curriculum

A thorough, didactic teaching curriculum, the Core Content Educational Presentation Series (CCEPS), consists of five hours of weekly educational presentations, including formal didactic sessions, small group synchronized learning, grand rounds with local and nationally renowned guest speakers, anatomy and procedure laboratories, resident case presentations, and morbidity and mortality review. In addition, dedicated time is spent reviewing and critiquing current emergency medicine literature and in teaching research methodology and statistics.

Clinical experience curriculum

An excellent clinical curriculum has been developed to offer comprehensive clinical training in a variety of settings:

  • The resident will receive training in emergency medicine and complete rotations in adult and pediatric critical care, telemetry, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology, research and administration.
  • Rotations at Brookdale University Medical Center, an urban, inner-city hospital, provides experience in trauma service and pediatric emergency service.
  • The resident also has the opportunity to participate in pre-hospital care during the Emergency Medical Service rotation. NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital is a certified on-line medical control station and conducts a Paramedic Training Institute under the medical direction of the Department of Emergency Medicine.
  • During the first year, the resident will rotate at the New York City Poison Control Center, an internationally recognized facility under the direction of the faculty of the emergency medicine department at New York University and Bellevue Hospital.
