Lung Cancer Screening & Prevention

Designated lung cancer screening center medal from the Americal College of RadiologyFind lung cancer early through screening

The best way to prevent lung cancer caused by tobacco use is never to start smoking or to quit smoking. If you have an increased risk of lung cancer due to a history of smoking, we encourage you to consider lung cancer screening with low-dose computed tomography (CT), which we offer at the Weill Cornell Medicine Meyer Cancer Center at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. Our Fred L. Mazzilli Lung Cancer Screening Program is the largest lung cancer screening program in Brooklyn and is an ACR Designated Lung Cancer Screening Center.

Most lung cancers start as small growths. Finding them early increases the chance of successful treatment. If your screening shows an abnormal test result, we will connect you with the other members of our care team for further evaluation and treatment, if necessary — all in one location.

Who should be screened for lung cancer?

Low-dose CT screening for lung cancer detection is recommended for people who meet these criteria:

  • Current or former smokers aged 55 to 80 years
  • A smoking history of at least 30 pack-years (such as smoking a pack a day for 30 years or two packs a day for 15 years)
  • No history of a lung cancer diagnosis
  • If you quit, you have quit smoking in the past 15 years
