ENT Testing
ENT physicians at NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital offer specialized testing onsite, including:
- Transnasal esophagoscopy. This device allows the doctor to look at the esophagus and perform biopsies by passing an ultrathin scope through the nose without having to give general anesthesia. This makes the procedures and recovery time shorter than with traditional methods for examining the esophagus.
- Stroboscopic laryngoscopy. This examination offers a specialized view of vocal fold vibration. Laryngeal stroboscopy involves controlled high-speed flashes of light timed to the frequency of the patient's voice. Images acquired during these flashes provide a slow motion-like view of vocal fold vibration during sound production.
- Balloon sinuplasty. This procedure is available for the treatment of sinusitis. In this procedure, the doctor threads a guide wire catheter into the nostrils and up into the blockage. The catheter is equipped with a tiny balloon, which is inflated to about a quarter of an inch once inside the passage. The balloon is inflated just enough to open the passageway. Once the passageway is open, the balloon is deflated and withdrawn. There are no incisions or cutting, and therefore no bruising or swelling.
- Other tests. We have equipment for swallowing evaluations and a microscope for detailed evaluations of the ear. We also have specialized equipment for surgery of the esophagus, larynx, and sinus.
