Treatments and Procedures

The Carmen and John Thain Center for Prenatal Pediatrics

At the Carmen and John Thain Center for Prenatal Pediatrics at NewYork-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital, you can receive all of your care in one convenient location. We'll work with you to schedule your diagnostic tests and consultations all on one day, if you prefer. When you return for additional visits, you'll return to the same familiar location and receive care from the same familiar faces. We remain with you at your side to support you throughout this journey.

  • We have special expertise in treating twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome - a condition in which a single placenta is shared unequally by a set of identical twins . We use fetoscopic laser technology to treat this disorder between weeks 16 and 26 of the pregnancy to enhance the chance of a healthy birth for both babies. Our hospital is one of only about a dozen centers nationally to offer this approach, and the only center in New York City.
  • We work with a team of high-risk pregnancy experts to perform the EXIT procedure. This rare surgical procedure is performed when the baby has a condition such as a neck or facial mass that leads to blockage of the infant’s airway once he or she is born.
  • We have special expertise in fetal MRI, enhancing the early and accurate diagnosis of brain malformations and neck masses. Results of testing can be used to plan the best care for a newborn.
  • We are the only hospital in New York City offering extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), which may be required to help infants born with congenital diaphragmatic hernia, lung lesions, or certain types of congenital heart disease.

The Fetal Care Center

The Fetal Care Center at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center is an internationally recognized facility for fetal diagnosis, counseling, and care.

  • Your team includes experts in pediatric surgery, heart care, nervous system care, craniofacial abnormalities, ear/nose/throat issues, orthopedics, urology and kidney care, blood disorders (hematology), and genetic disorders. We also have expertise in the care of twin-twin infusion syndrome, neonatal abstinence syndrome, and any condition that makes a pregnancy high risk.
  • We are renowned for our care of birth defects affecting the brain and/or spinal cord, including hydrocephalus (excess fluid in the brain), spinal cord disorders (such as spina bifida), congenital cysts, and congenital brain abnormalities.
  • We offer specialized care for unborn children diagnosed with urogenital problems, such as hydronephrosis (a blockage in the ureter where it joins the kidney prevents urine from draining into the bladder). The Fetal Care Center partners with the Institute for Pediatric Urology to provide comprehensive care for unborn children with urogenital problems.
  • Patients come from all over to our Fetal Echocardiography Service to receive care from dedicated specialists with expertise diagnosing and treating abnormalities affecting the heart.
  • Our center provides exceptional orthopedic care for infants with problems such as clubfoot, congenital short femur, skeletal dysplasias, and congenital spine anomalies (which can be diagnosed before birth), as well as hip dislocation/dysplasia and other problems diagnosed after birth. The Pediatric Orthopedic Service features pediatric orthopedists affiliated with the world-renowned Hospital for Special Surgery, who also serve as faculty at Weill Cornell Medical College.
