Advanced Care for Complex Pregnancies
If you are pregnant and your doctor has told you that are you at risk for complications, NewYork-Presbyterian can provide all the care you and your baby need, through one medical center. Our internationally acclaimed maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) specialists have extraordinary expertise and experience caring for women with complicated pregnancies. Our team is led by academic leaders with the most advanced knowledge of the potential obstetric, medical, genetic, and surgical complications of pregnancy. Your care includes:
A Complete Suite of Services: We offer every service, ranging from routine screening tests to advanced maternal and fetal diagnostic tools, monitoring, and intervention. We have the most advanced monitoring tools in our arsenal, including ultrasound, fetal echocardiography, Doppler ultrasound, fetal MRI, and genetic sonography to assess the developing fetus; first-trimester screening for Down syndrome, ectopic pregnancy, multiple pregnancies, and birth defects; and prenatal diagnosis using amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling (CVS), and fetal blood sampling (cordocentesis). We support you and your baby during and after the journey of pregnancy.
A Reputation for Specialized Care: We are known for our expertise caring for multiple pregnancies; women carrying infants diagnosed with fetal abnormalities; and pregnant women with diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, thyroid disease, cancer, neurological disorders, and autoimmune diseases such as lupus. We are widely known as a referral center for placenta accreta, a complication in which the placenta attaches itself too deeply into the wall of the uterus. Women with this condition are at risk for premature birth and severe hemorrhage. If you have placenta accreta, we monitor you closely and tailor a delivery plan to enhance the safety of you and your child.
All Specialists in One Location: If you have a co-existing condition, you can receive your care from renowned specialists - such as cardiologists and cardiac surgeons, neurologists and neurosurgeons, gastroenterologists, endocrinologists, oncologists, urologists, immunologists, and others - with whom the MFM team has a long history of closely collaborating. These specialists are in the same medical center, and we can access them immediately before, during, and after childbirth, should you need them. This proximity and easy access to this breadth of specialists is invaluable when treatment within minutes can make the difference in your health and the health of your baby.
Leadership in Maternal-Fetal Medicine: We are the only institution in New York State participating in the National Institutes of Health Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units Network, which conducts studies aimed at improving outcomes for mothers and newborns - particularly those studying the causes of preterm delivery and high blood pressure. Our doctors pioneered the development of the first-trimester genetic screening tests for chromosomal abnormalities that are now routinely used in pregnancy care.
