Research-Based Treatment

NewYork-Presbyterian treats gynecologic cancers such as:

  • Cervical cancer
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Fallopian tube cancer
  • Vaginal/vulvar cancer
  • Uterine (endometrial) cancer

We tailor your treatment to the type and stage of your gynecologic cancer. Your treatment may include:

  • Surgery: If you need surgery, we take a minimally invasive approach whenever possible. You may have laparoscopy, which can sometimes be performed as an outpatient procedure and which is associated with smaller incisions, less blood loss, and a shorter recovery time than open abdominal surgery. If you have endometrial or cervical cancer and you need a hysterectomy, you may be able to have the operation using robotic surgery, which our surgeons are exceptionally skilled at performing.
  • Chemotherapy: We provide the latest anticancer drugs and drug combinations designed to slow, stop, or shrink your cancer. Intraperitoneal chemotherapy is offered for women who may benefit from such chemotherapy delivered directly into the abdomen or pelvis.
  • Radiation therapy: If your cancer can be treated with radiation therapy, we offer external beam radiation therapy, in which radiation beams are finely targeted to your tumor, sparing as much nearby healthy tissue as possible. We also treat some gynecologic cancers using internal radiation therapy (brachytherapy), in which a radioactive source is inserted into the vagina and left in place for up to a few days (during which time you stay in the hospital) to eliminate nearby cancer cells.
  • Investigational Therapies: We belong to the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG), which promotes excellence in the field of gynecologic cancer research. Many of the therapies used to treat gynecologic cancers today were evaluated through GOG clinical trials. We also offer other clinical trials; you may have the opportunity to participate in these studies.
