Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a behavioral disorder that is usually first diagnosed in childhood and is characterized by inattention, impulsivity, and, in some cases, hyperactivity. ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed behavior disorder of childhood. Recent data suggest that some 9.5 percent (5.4 million) of children ages 4 to 17 have ever been diagnosed with ADHD. Boys are two to three times more likely to have ADHD than girls.

Treatment may include medication and/or psychosocial treatments. NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital offers comprehensive treatment of ADHD for children, adolescents, and also adults.

Bradley S. Peterson, M.D., is the Director of the Center for Neurologic Services at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center.
