Cystic Fibrosis Rehabilitation

NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital offers specialized rehabilitation for patients with Cystic Fibrosis. Our physical therapists work closely with the teams of both the Sue and John L. Weinberg Cystic Fibrosis Center at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital and the Gunnar Esiason Adult Cystic Fibrosis & Lung Program at Columbia University Medical Center.

Our physical therapists work with hospitalized patients providing traditional airway clearance such as full postural drainage with percussion and vibration, commonly referred to as chest physical therapy. Patients are also taught alternative airway clearance techniques such as the Active Cycle of Breathing Technique, autogenic drainage, the use of mucus clearance devices such as the Flutter® and Acapella®, and the use of mechanical vest devices.

Outpatients are seen once a year in the clinic where the physical therapist assesses the patient and reviews the airway clearance regimen. The therapist may then make recommendations for improvements specific to each patient which may include alternative airway clearance techniques and general conditioning exercises.
