Manic depression, also known as bipolar disorder, is a type of affective disorder or mood disorder that goes beyond the day's ordinary ups and downs. It can become a serious medical condition and is an important health concern in this country. Manic depression is characterized by periodic episodes of extreme elation, elevated mood, or irritability (also called mania) countered by periodic, classic depressive symptoms.

The Anxiety and Mood Disorders Service at the NewYork-Presbyterian/Westchester Division in White Plains, New York offers comprehensive, individualized outpatient care for adults with bipolar disorder. Services include individual therapy, group therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and management of medications.

The Affective Disorders Program offers inpatient care for patients with bipolar disorder. Patients receive a comprehensive evaluation and a treatment plan tailored to their individual needs. Each patient receives individual psychotherapy, group therapy, and medication as needed. Special programs are dedicated to the care of women, and older individuals.
