Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder (also called manic depression) is characterized by periodic episodes of extreme elation, elevated mood, or irritability (also called mania) countered by periodic, classic depressive symptoms. Manic depression affects more than 5.7 million American adults – or about 2.6 percent of Americans age 18 and older in a given year. NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital offers inpatient and outpatient care for bipolar disorder, including medication and psychotherapy.

Jeffrey A. Lieberman, M.D., the Psychiatrist-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center, discusses major advances in the field of psychiatry during the past century.
