Anxiety Disorders

About Our Program

NewYork-Presbyterian doctors provide patients affected by anxiety disorders with ways to overcome their affliction.

Generalized anxiety disorder, which can cause excessive worry about health, money, family, or work, and causes people to continually anticipate disaster. Each year, 3.1 percent of people ages 18 and 54 are affected by generalized anxiety.

The positive news is that treatment for anxiety disorders is now better than ever before. Medications have been created in recent years that allow doctors to treat anxiety disorders with lower does and with fewer side effects than were previously possible. Another promising advancement has been the use of virtual reality exposure therapy. In this therapy, patients are brought into a virtual environment and carefully "walked through" the activity that panics them until they are comfortable with it.

These types of therapies are being developed at academic medical centers such as NewYork-Presbyterian and leading to promising results. It is an exciting time that should give patients seeking help a great deal of hope that with proper clinical care their problems can be overcome.

Patients can choose to receive treatment for anxiety disorders at all three of NewYork-Presbyterian's campuses. They can also choose the level of care that best suits their needs.
