Colorectal Disease

Diseases of the colon and rectum are a major focus of specialization of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. The coordinated efforts and humanistic approach of our gastroenterologists and surgeons have enhanced the diagnostic and treatment options available for the whole spectrum of colorectal disease, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and benign and malignant colon and rectal cancers. A center for basic research on the bowel and the enteric nervous system at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons is providing important new information for clinicians. A tissue bank and data tissue bank, established at Weill Medical College of Cornell University and at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, is facilitating additional advances in both basic and clinical research.

Patients with benign disorders, such as diverticulitis, and those with precancerous and malignant colorectal conditions, benefit from the expertise of multiple specialists who coordinate all aspects of care from medical evaluation to surgical intervention and follow-up. Advanced technologies are applied in colon and rectal surgery, including minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic procedures, which avoid large incisions, lessen trauma to the body, and minimize the effect of surgery on the immune system. Our physicians also are experts in the diagnosis and management of preneoplastic polyposis disorders, and can offer genetic counseling and testing.
