About Our Program

At NewYork-Presbyterian Queens, we understand that pediatric emergencies are very different from adult emergencies. High-quality pediatric care demands a multidisciplinary team specifically trained in treating acutely ill and injured children. We provide outstanding emergency care for sick and injured children and young adults, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in dedicated, child-friendly spaces.

Our multidisciplinary emergency care team includes a range of specialists who collaborate to treat complex medical issues, including:

  • The largest group of physicians in Queens who are board-certified in Pediatric Emergency Medicine and have years of experience in pediatric emergency care
  • A dedicated pediatric radiologist and pediatric orthopedist with access to X-rays, ultrasound, and CT imaging and 24/7 access to emergency MRI within the hospital
  • Nurses, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants with training and credentials in pediatric emergency care, including pediatric advanced life support and trauma care
  • Pediatric specialists and subspecialists include surgery, gastroenterology (digestive care), cardiology (heart care), neurology, neonatology (newborn care), pulmonology (lung care), and ophthalmology (eye care)
  • Multilingual staff with emergency care experience to ensure you and your child understand what is needed and how our team will provide care

Our pediatric emergency care team collaborates closely with dozens of medical and surgical subspecialists who practice at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens, ensuring that every child’s medical needs can be addressed in one center.

Our Pediatric Emergency Department was designed for children, teens, and young adults and is located in a designated section, separate from the adult emergency area. With murals and design elements incorporated into each treatment area, your child receives care in a pleasant, soothing environment.

Our Approach to Care

Holistic and Comprehensive Care

At NewYork-Presbyterian Queens, we recognize that every child with an acute medical condition has a unique set of symptoms, circumstances, and needs. We take a holistic approach to care that considers the entire patient, including their physical, emotional, and social factors. We partner with patients and their families in shared decision-making, empowering them with knowledge, support, and the most effective treatment options to achieve the best possible outcome for every child.

Family-Centered Care

We believe emergencies impact not only your child but your entire family. We promote a “family-centered model” in which we encourage you to participate in decision-making and remain present for your child’s medical care. We will inform you and your child, guide you through your visit, and facilitate appropriate follow-up.

A Pain-Free Experience

Treating pain is one of our top priorities. Our team will rapidly assess your child when they arrive and provide prompt pain relief.

Pediatric Hospitalist Program

Hospitalists are doctors who work exclusively within the hospital and provide continuity of care. There is always a pediatric hospitalist onsite at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens. The pediatric hospitalist is available for consultations in the Pediatric Emergency Department. It can promptly connect children with the necessary care, including admission to the Pediatric Inpatient Unit or Intermediate Care Unit, if needed.

Child Life Specialists

Our dedicated child life specialists work with your child and your family in the emergency room, before surgery or a procedure to address any fears, reduce anxiety, and answer any questions you may have. They are specially trained and certified to ensure that each child’s hospital experience is positive and supportive.

An Intermediate Care Unit Just for Children

Children who need more intensive care are treated in our state-of-the-art Pediatric Intermediate Care Unit (PIMU). The five-bed unit serves acutely ill children and others with illnesses requiring more frequent monitoring. Two of the beds are hard-wired for video electroencephalography (VEEG) to observe and track seizures in children with epilepsy and other seizure disorders.

Parents As Team Members

As a parent, only you can provide important information about your child. You can also help other team members shape your child’s personalized treatment program based on your child’s physical, emotional, and practical needs. Your input is critical for making final decisions regarding your child’s care and our multidisciplinary team is here to work alongside you and your family to achieve the greatest possible outcomes for your child.
