NewYork-Presbyterian Queens provides emergency care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to over 100,000 patients annually.

The Emergency Department is staffed by highly qualified professionals who are dedicated to healing and trained to provide the best care as quickly as possible. All physicians specialize in emergency medicine and are certified in advanced cardiac life support, advanced trauma life support, and pediatric advanced life support.

Physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and registered nurses specially trained in emergency medicine and trauma are skilled in identifying urgent medical conditions that require immediate intervention. Each patient is screened upon arrival and is triaged into one of four distinct separate care areas designated to treat medical conditions from minor to serious.

What Should I Bring to the ED?

In an emergency, it may not be possible to collect any information or items. However, when you have time there are some things you or someone you live with can do to allow us to help you more quickly and accurately:

  • A list of your medications or pill bottles
  • A list of your medical conditions and/or surgical history
  • Allergy information
  • The names of all of the doctors that treat you
  • If possible, leave valuables and other items at home (in case you are admitted).

Level 1 Trauma Center. Our Emergency Department has been designated by the New York State Department of Health as regional Level 1 Trauma Center and treats more than 1,000 adult and pediatric trauma cases each year. This designation means that a complete support staff of physicians is always available to treat life-threatening traumatic injuries, and includes specialists in surgery, neurosurgery, anesthesia, orthopaedics, vascular radiology, and others.

New York State-Designated Stroke Center. NewYork-Presbyterian/Queens is a New York State-Designated Regional Stroke Center. This means that the highest standard of quality, access to care, the latest technology and medicines are employed when treating patients who are suffering from acute stroke, both in the Emergency Department and throughout hospitalization. Specialist physicians in stroke care are always available. Emergency staff receive ongoing training and education regarding diagnosis and therapy for stroke.

Designated Emergency Heart Care Station. The Emergency Department is the entry point for a range of diagnostic and therapeutic modalities offered by NewYork-Presbyterian Queens for treatment of acute cardiac conditions including heart attack. The emergency staff is well-trained in immediate actions that are necessary in rapidly identifying patients with acute cardiac conditions, and works in concert with the Division of Cardiology and Interventional cardiologists to provide access to urgent angioplasty, "clot-busting" medications such as t-PA that dissolve dangerous blood clots, as well as cardiac surgery.

Fast Track Care. For less serious problems such as sore throats, cuts and rashes, the Department's Fast Track section offers immediate and rapid evaluations 24 hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week. A separate entrance helps speed patients into registration and there is a waiting area designed for Fast Track patients. A separate staff is specially trained to handle minor emergencies can triage and treat patients efficiently.

On-Call Ambulance Service. NYP Queens also offers its own ambulance service to Queens residents who wish to be transported to the medical center for emergency treatment or admission. The ambulance service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is staffed by New York State certified EMTs and paramedics who specialize in treating all types of emergencies. Medicare, Medicaid, and most insurance plans are accepted. Call 718-670-2222 and the medical center will dispatch an ambulance to you immediately.

Visiting. NYP Queens welcomes visitors to its Emergency Department for short visits. However, it is in the best interest of the patient to limit visitors to one at the bedside. All visitation is at the discretion of the nurse in charge.
