Biography

Dr. Chai brings a breadth and depth of expertise in complex neonatal surgery and minimally invasive cardiac surgery. In addition to directing NYP/Columbia’s pediatric heart transplantation and mechanical assist device services, Dr. Chai also directs congenital heart surgery services at the Weill Cornell campus. He performs aortic valve surgery, including valve-sparing root replacements, in both pediatric and adult patients; and continues to care for his patients as they grow into adulthood as part of the hospital’s adult congenital heart disease service.

Dr. Chai comes to NYP/Columbia most recently from the Johns Hopkins Children’s Heart Surgery Program at All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, where he served for nine years as Associate Medical Director of the Heart Institute.

Between 1986 and 2003, Dr. Chai completed his undergraduate degree, medical school, general surgical residency and cardiothoracic surgical fellowship at Duke University and Duke University School of Medicine. He spent an additional two years studying methods to minimize the detrimental effects of cardiopulmonary bypass and hypothermic circulatory arrest on neurologic and pulmonary function. He completed his fellowship in pediatric cardiac surgery at the University of Michigan in 2004.
