Dr. Stewart is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College, and Otolaryngologist-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. He also serves as Vice Dean of the Medical College, and the E. Darracott Vaughan, Jr., MD Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs. He received a B.E. degree summa cum laude from Vanderbilt University, and his MD from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He completed residency training in General Surgery and Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine, and received his MPH degree from the University of Texas School of Public Health. At Baylor College of Medicine after residency training, he served as Associate Professor and Director of Residency Education in the Department, Chief of Service at Ben Taub General Hospital, and Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs for the College, before coming to Weill Cornell.
Dr. Stewart's clinical practice is general otolaryngology, and he has particular interest in nose and sinus disease, sleep breathing disorders, and head and neck trauma. He is the author of 2 textbooks, as well as more than 30 book chapters and 100 peer-reviewed publications.
Dr. Stewart is the Editor-in-Chief of The Laryngoscope journal, and has previously served as Associate Editor or on the Editorial Board of many other journals, including the International Forum of Allergy and Rhinology, American Journal of Rhinology and Allergy, Archives of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and ENT Today. He is a member of many scientific societies, has lectured nationally and internationally, and serves on several national groups. He is the chair of the Education Council of the American Board of Otolaryngology, and the immediate past chair of the Research Advisory Board for the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. He is the immediate Past-President of the Association of Academic Departments of Oto-HNS, and a Past-President of the Society of University Otolaryngologist-Head and Neck Surgeons. He also serves as a Director of the American Board of Otolaryngology, and in 2011 was elected as a Director of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the American Rhinologic Society.
Dr. Stewart's research interests are in outcomes and quality of life research, and he has received research funding from the NIH, AHRQ, the AAOHNS Foundation, other foundations, and industry.
Dr. Stewart has received many awards and honors, including the Fulbright and Jaworski Faculty Excellence Award while at Baylor College of Medicine, and he was inducted into the Academy of Distinguished Educators there. In addition, he has received a Presidential Citation from the AAO-HNS, and he is a two-time recicipient of the Academy's Distinguished Service Award. He received the Houston Distinguished Surgeon Award from AORN in 2005. He is listed in Best Doctors in America by Castle Connolly, Marquis Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and also in Best Doctors in New York by Castle Connolly, and by New York Magazine.
