Dr. Loughlin's clinical expertise is in disorders of breathing during sleep (sleep apnea), difficulty to control asthma, and chronic lung disease in children. He also works with children who have respiratory symptoms associated with dysfunctional swallowing and gastroesophageal reflux. He is board certified in both Pediatrics and Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine. He is currently the Nancy C. Paduano Professor and Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics and is a member of the Division of Pulmonology, Allergy and Immunology. In addition, he serves as Senior Associate Dean for International Clinical Program Planning at Weill Cornell Medical College. An expert in the area of pediatric respiratory disorders, he has edited two text books, written several textbook chapters and has authored or co-authored over 40 pediatric articles.
Dr. Loughlin received his MD from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and completed his Pediatric Residency and Pediatric Pulmonary Fellowship at the University of Arizona Health Center in Tuscon. He then joined the faculty of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Florida. In 1984, he arrived at Johns Hopkins University, where he started the Division of Pediatric Respiratory Sciences. He directed this program until he came to Weill Cornell in the fall of 2002. Dr. Loughlin is credited with building and leading one of the top five pediatric pulmonary care, research and training programs in the nation during his time at Johns Hopkins.
