Pediatric Services

Pediatric Radiology

Children experience unique medical conditions that may require unique imaging and diagnostic services. At NewYork-Presbyterian, our pediatric radiologists specialize in performing advanced, comprehensive imaging services for children of all ages. Using the newest generation of low-dose equipment specifically designed for children, we provide your child with accurate and timely results that help you make informed choices to optimize their health and wellbeing.

About Our Program

Across NewYork-Presbyterian's two children's hospitals, NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital and NewYork-Presbyterian Komansky Children's Hospital, we perform tens of thousands of imaging studies each year. Our board-certified pediatric radiologists harness the latest knowledge and the most advanced imaging technologies to evaluate your child expertly.

We have a long, proud tradition of developing and refining diagnostic imaging services for children. Our pediatric radiologists were the first to describe many of the classic X-ray appearances of pediatric diseases. We are continuing this tradition, using state-of-the-art technologies.

We equip our imaging facilities with the most technologically advanced equipment, specially designed or adapted for children. Because children are more sensitive to the effects of radiation used in imaging, we are committed to using the lowest dose procedures and equipment while still providing outstanding diagnostic service. We are active participants in the Image Gently Alliance's Image Gently initiative, a campaign founded by the Society for Pediatric Radiology to provide safe, high-quality pediatric imaging nationwide.

Our staff includes not only pediatric radiologists but dedicated pediatric neuroradiologists to interpret brain and spine studies. Our pediatric anesthesiologists supervise all procedures that require sedation to help your child relax and remain comfortable and still during an imaging exam. Our team also includes child life specialists whose goal is to help your child feel secure, comforted, and understand what is going on.

We understand the unique needs of children, parents, and pediatricians. We work collaboratively as part of your child's healthcare team to provide image interpretation promptly to facilitate an accurate and efficient diagnosis, so your child receives the best possible care.

Our Approach to Care

A Multidisciplinary Team Approach

Our pediatric radiologists work collaboratively as part of your child's healthcare team to create the safest and most effective imaging plan for your child. Our staff includes pediatric radiologists, pediatric interventionalists, and dedicated pediatric neuroradiologists to interpret brain scans. Pediatric anesthesiologists supervise all procedures that require sedation to help your child relax and remain comfortable and still during an imaging exam. Our team also includes child life specialists who help your child feel secure, comforted, and understand what is going on.

Image Gently Initiative

At NewYork-Presbyterian, we are active participants in the Alliance for Radiation Safety in Pediatric Imaging's Image Gently initiative, a campaign dedicated to providing safe, high-quality pediatric imaging nationwide. As part of Image Gently, we are committed to imaging when there is a clear medical benefit; using the lowest amount of radiation to get a diagnostic image; imaging only the indicated area; avoiding multiple scans; and using alternative diagnostic studies (such as ultrasound or MRI) when possible.

Ensuring Your Child's Comfort

We understand that your child may feel anxious about having an X-ray, CT scan, MRI, or other imaging tests. To ensure that your child is as comfortable as possible, we encourage you to be with them during the examination, and we will fully explain each step of the imaging process. Our team also includes Child Life specialists, who aim to help your child feel secure and comfortable during their test.

Parents as Team Members

As a parent, only you can provide important information about your child. You can also help other team members shape your child's personalized treatment program based on your child's physical, emotional, and practical needs. Your input is critical for making final decisions regarding your child's care, and our multidisciplinary team is here to work alongside you and your family to achieve the greatest possible outcomes for your child.

Why Choose Us

Nationally Ranked Children's Hospitals

Both NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital and NewYork-Presbyterian Komansky Children's Hospital are among the nation's leading centers for the diagnosis and treatment of childhood diseases. They are major referral centers for complex and rare disorders in infants, children, and adolescents.

Leaders in the Field

Our pediatric radiologists are leaders in the field of pediatric radiology. They are Diplomates of the American Board of Radiology and have earned Certificates of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Pediatric Radiology. Our Pediatric Radiology faculty can assist the referring pediatrician in selecting the best test for the individual patient and answer any questions and concerns that patients or parents may have.

Leading-Edge Equipment

Our imaging facilities are equipped with the most technologically advanced equipment, specially designed or adapted for children. We offer 64-slice CT scanning, the latest imaging technology, and unparalleled resolution and quick scanning times.

  • NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital recently installed state-of-the-art imaging equipment called Scoliosis Imaging with EOS, which offers high-quality 2D and 3D images of a child's anatomy while delivering considerably lower radiation dose than conventional radiography. Since children with conditions such as scoliosis (curvature of the spine) may have to undergo numerous imaging studies over the years during which they are treated for their condition, low-dose imaging is key.
  • The 60-bed NICU at NewYork-Presbyterian Cohen Hospital for Women and Newborns is the first in New York City with an MR-compatible incubator, fluoroscopy unit, and an operating room within the NICU that facilitates imaging of the most vulnerable patients.
