Newborn Care

Superior Neonatal Care

Complete Care for All Newborns

In addition to providing comprehensive care for well babies, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital is renowned for the care of newborns with complex conditions.

  • Superior Newborn Heart Surgery: Our pediatric heart surgeons are internationally acclaimed for repairing congenital heart defects (those present at birth). Many of these procedures are performed in low-birthweight newborns and in infants under the age of one month.
  • Exceptional Respiratory Care: We were among the first hospitals in the country to offer extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for infants with severe respiratory failure who cannot be treated successfully with standard therapies. We remain one of only three facilities in the Tri-State area to offer this artificial heart-lung system to support a baby until his or her lungs can function on their own.
  • Pioneers in Newborn Neurologic Support: Our work in newborn medicine is having a major impact on the study of cerebral palsy and newborn stroke. Our physicians apply the latest neurological advances, such as electroencephalography (EEG) methods to access brain function, and head cooling caps, which lower the baby's head and body temperature to help lessen the risk of a nervous system problem.
