Craniofacial Centers

Restoring Form and Function, Building Self-Esteem

Thousands of infants are born each year in the United States with cleft lip, cleft palate, and other complex facial deformities. Without the right treatment, children may grow up feeling rejected by their peers or isolated by their appearance. If your child was born with a deformity of the face or head or has experienced disfiguring trauma or a facial tumor, the experts in the Craniofacial Centers at NewYork-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital and NewYork-Presbyterian/Phyllis and David Komansky Center for Children's Health can help. The quality and timing of your child's surgeries can affect how they feel about themselves as they grow up.

We offer:

  • A Customized Team for Your Child: Many specialists are required to provide the expert consultation and skillful care that your child will need. The timing of such care is also critical to achieving the best outcome. We put together a personalized, multidisciplinary team of experts with the training and expertise to meet your child's needs. Our teams include surgeons, pediatricians, dentists and other oral care specialists, nurses, audiologists, speech and language therapists, feeding therapists, occupational therapists, geneticists, and social workers. Child life specialists are also available to help ease the hospital experience.
  • Coordinated Care for You: We understand it can be challenging to juggle appointments and manage all the different aspects of your child's care. To provide seamless, efficient care, our patient care coordinators manage all the specialty consultations and steps required to care for your child. Our coordinators help arrange any necessary appointments, explain treatments, and review the timeframe for your child's care. We also help coordinate the care provided by our team with your child's pediatrician.
  • A Nationally Ranked Children's Hospital: NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital ranks in more pediatric specialties than any other New York metro area hospital in U.S. News & World Report's "Best Children's Hospitals" report. Your child's healthcare team has access to all of the various pediatric medical and surgical subspecialists who practice at NewYork-Presbyterian, ensuring that all of your child's medical needs can be addressed. We collaborate closely with our specialists in prenatal pediatrics, vascular anomalies, pediatric dermatology, and otorhinolaryngology (ENT).
  • The Most Advanced Treatments: Thanks to advances in treatment, many children with craniofacial syndromes can achieve a happy life. We create a long-term treatment plan that is personalized for your child, and is designed to help him or her achieve an active and productive life. We take care of children with all types of craniofacial disorders, including birth defects as well as those due to injury or illness, such as cleft lip, cleft palate, craniosynostosis, craniofacial syndromes, Pierre Robin sequence, Treacher Collins syndrome, facial trauma, jaw disorders, hemangiomas and other vascular malformations, velopharyngeal insufficiency, positional plagiocephaly ("flat head syndrome"), and hemifacial microsomia.
  • Families Are Team Members, Too: We encourage you to participate actively in your child's care. We provide the guidance and information you need to understand all of his or her treatment options. We also understand that your family's life can be challenging as you cope with issues such as feeding and positioning an infant, dealing with insurance and managed care, and addressing anxieties about your future. It is very common for families to feel overwhelmed. Each of our team members is dedicated to helping you cope and manage these issues and others that may arise.
  • We're Committed to Research: As part of our continuing mission to provide each of our patients with the highest quality care, we conduct ongoing research to advance and refine reconstructive surgical procedures.
  • We Serve the World: Our team members have organized and participated in a number of nonprofit surgical missions to other countries, including Colombia, Guatemala, and China, to treat children with cleft lips, cleft palates, and other craniofacial problems. During a typical mission, our specialists provide care to families who might not otherwise be able to access these vital services for their children.
