Sickle Cell Disease

A Leader in Bone Marrow Transplantation for Sickle Cell Disease

The Sickle Cell Transplant Program at NewYork-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital features a team of physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, coordinators, social workers, child life specialists, psychologists, pediatric surgeons, and other pediatric specialists. With over a decade of experience, we have the expertise to provide state-of-the-art care for children with sickle cell disease.

  • Comprehensive Care for All Children: Our center is one of the largest in the Tri-State area offering bone marrow transplantation — the only way to cure sickle cell disease. Children who are not candidates for this treatment benefit from other therapies to relieve their symptoms and reduce the risk of complications. We strive to maintain regular communication with your child's referring physician to ensure continuity of care.
  • Dedication to Research: We participate in clinical trials aimed at improving the futures of children with sickle cell disease. Our institution uses a low-intensity conditioning regimen in children receiving a bone marrow transplant from a sibling, an approach we've adopted to decrease long-term side effects. We are also participating in a nationally funded multicenter clinical trial aimed at improving the success of bone marrow transplantation from an unrelated donor by reducing the intensity of the conditioning regimen. Other studies are focusing on improving quality of life and preserving fertility in those undergoing a bone marrow transplant.
  • Support and Education: We educate you and your child about sickle cell disease and what you both can do to maintain your child's health. Support is available from a variety of specialists with experience caring for patients with sickle cell disease, including social workers, psychologists, child life specialists, teachers, interpreters, fertility specialists, and genetic counselors. We also offer dedicated programs for siblings of children staying in the hospital.
