Open Heart Surgery Discharge Classes

All classes are 1/2 hour Monday - Friday 5 Hudson North.
Call CHEC to confirm date/time.

Care at Home (Monday and Thursday - 2:30 PM)
Sit down with our staff to discuss your expectations and fears of going home. Topics discussed include incision care, showering, driving, exercise, what to watch out for, etc.

Cardiac Yoga & Stretching After Surgery (Tuesday - 2:30 PM)
Practice gentle stretches, postures and breathing techniques that can aid in stress reduction during and after your stay in the hospital.

Stress Management (Wednesday - 2:30 PM)
Learn valuable tools for stress reduction that can be utilized upon your discharge from the hospital.

Physical Activity (Wednesday - 3 PM)
The role of activity in the healing process, the modification needed after open-heart surgery and the necessity for physical activity to maintain good health will all be discussed.

Resuming Your Diet at Home (Monday and Thursday - 3 PM)
The role of diet in your recovery after heart surgery will be discussed. You may schedule individual education about your cardiac diet after the class.

For Family - Caregivers (Tuesday - 2:30 PM)
Caregivers are invited to explore new ways to manage stress and anxiety, replenish their personal resources, and create a healing environment.

Practice gentle stretches, postures and breathing techniques that can aid in stress reduction during and after your stay in the hospital.

Restorative Yoga For Families (Friday - 3:00 PM)
Restorative yoga helps to reduce stress by both gently stimulating and soothing the body, leaving one feeling nourished and well-rested.c

Interventional Cardiology Classes

The Interventional Cardiology Discharge Class is a 2-part class covering Heartwise Nutrition and heart function/management. All classes are one hour starting at 10:00am, Tuesday - Saturday, 5 Garden North and 9 Hudson North. Call CHEC to confirm date and time.

Discharge After an Interventional Procedure
The Discharge Class is given by an interventional cardiology nurse who reviews basic heart function, angioplasty and stenting procedures, an extensive review of cardiovascular risk factor management, activity and follow up care is discussed.

Heartwise Nutrition
Directly follows Discharge Class Tuesday - Friday The Heartwise Nutrition class is taught by a registered dietitian and provides information regarding all aspects of heart healthy diets including low fat/low cholesterol, low salt and diabetic diets.

The format for both classes is highly interactive with opportunities for questions and discussion.
