MS in Management: Nursing Leadership at the NYU Wagner Graduate School of Public Service Developed in Collaboration with NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital

The Program

NYU Wagner's Master of Science in Management: Nursing Leadership, developed in collaboration with NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, serves the educational needs of nurses who seek to advance to positions of greater leadership, or wish to be more effective in their current nurse leader roles. The program equips students with professional skills, exposing them to a broad set of leadership and management challenges. It aims to meet the critical need of the healthcare sector for exceptional leadership in front-line management of large healthcare enterprises.

Curriculum

The program includes customized core courses, using nursing management case studies developed and taught by NYU Wagner faculty, as well as senior leaders at NewYork-Presbyterian. Relevant elective course offerings from throughout New York University are also included. The curriculum emphasizes a blend of theory and practice. Nurses will be offered the opportunity to learn from the latest research in healthcare management, while applying this learning directly to their own professional context. The program is designed to adapt to the working individual's needs, including classes at convenient times and locations.

Students complete 36 credits, consisting of five core courses and four electives. Students can take elective courses in the Wagner School as well as other NYU Schools, such as the Stern School of Business, the Law School, and the College of Nursing. All students are required to complete an End Event Capstone, a project-based course that offers an opportunity to integrate and apply their learning from the program in a hands on setting. The curriculum is organized to be completed over the course of two academic years and one summer, on a part-time basis while students are working full-time.

Admissions

NYU Wagner's Master of Science in Management: Nursing Leadership is designed for nurses with several years working experience who currently hold some management or leadership responsibility and wish to progress to a formal management role, or those already in a management position without advanced credentials. The MS in Management is also an excellent degree for those nursing leaders whose prior graduate study was in a clinical field.

The admissions process, administered through NYU Wagner, is designed to review the overall potential of applicants. Decisions are not based on one single indicator. For more detailed information please visit wagner.nyu.edu/admissions

An admission decision will include the following criteria:

  • Prior academic performance
Applicants must have earned the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree. Official transcripts are required. A minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or equivalent is generally required. Applicants with weaker records or those who have little quantitative coursework completed are strongly encouraged to take the Graduate Record Exam.
  • Work Experience
Applicants must submit a resume showing several years of relevant professional experience with some exposure to management responsibilities. Those applicants who are not yet in formal management roles must demonstrate that they have taken on management duties, such as leadership of a working group or supervision of a shift.
  • Statement of Purpose
Applicants must submit a Statement of Purpose, detailing their professional goals and how the Master of Science will help them to achieve those goals. The admissions committee uses the statement of purpose to assess fit with the degree program, readiness for graduate study, and writing ability.
  • Letters of Recommendation
Applicants must submit two letters of recommendation from people who know them well, and who have been responsible for evaluating their academic or professional work. Professors and workplace supervisors are both appropriate.
