Professional Development
As a new employee of the Department of Nursing you will receive orientation provided by the Division of Nursing Education. After the Hospital orientation day, you will attend nursing orientation. General nursing orientation classes are followed by unit orientation. Instructors in the division develop an individual orientation plan for each new nurse with learning activities specific to the assigned specialty area. This orientation may include a core course such as critical care, emergency, obstetrics, or operating room nursing. Clinical orientation will be guided by an experienced nurse preceptor in cooperation with the instructor assigned to the unit.
After orientation, you will be attending other education activities provided by the Division of Nursing Education. These include unit based and hospital wide inservice programs, all day workshops, Nursing Grand Rounds, BLS classes, and continuing education classes. Instructors make unit rounds to determine learning needs and act as resources for the nursing staff.
The Division of Nursing Education also provides orientation and inservice for Nursing Attendants, Medical Assistants, Technicians, Unit Assistants and other professionals and paraprofessionals employed by the Department of Nursing.
