Clinical Practice

The NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital Department of Nursing utilizes the councilor model to meet its goal of shared governance. Grounded in the concept of empowerment, shared governance gives professional nurses the opportunity to both influence the strategic direction of patient care and participates in achieving the goals established by the Department of Nursing and the organization.

Goals of Shared Governance

The goals of shared governance are to stimulate, facilitate and generate knowledge that will improve patient care and to enhance the work environment in which NewYork-Presbyterian professional nurses participate in shaping their professional practice.

The shared governance structure at each site is comprised of the following councils:

  1. Nursing Executive Council
  2. Nursing Practice Council
  3. Nursing Practice & Documentation Council
  4. Nursing Quality Council
  5. Nursing Education Council
  6. Nursing Research Council
  7. Nursing Operations Council

The Nursing Practice Councils (at the unit and cross campus levels) review and recommend revisions/additions to evidence based standards for professional nursing practice at NewYork-Presbyterian. This work includes reviewing new practice recommendations, communicating outcomes and reviewing procedures for new products/programs while ensuring nursing accountability for autonomous decision making and patient care.
