Hospital Sites Open for 2,700 Walkers Raising Funds for Breast Cancer

New York, NY (Sep 17, 2003)

NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, New York City's largest hospital and proud medical sponsor of the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, will welcome close to 2,700 participating walkers at the Columbia University Medical Center and Weill Cornell Medical Centers. Before the two-day, 39-mile walk, NewYork-Presbyterian medical staff offer advice on preparation and training that all walkers should follow:

  • Fuel: Stay hydrated, and eat a sandwich, fruit, power bars, goo, or other high energy snacks during walks longer than 12 miles. Avoid fatty foods.
  • Attire: To avoid blisters and chafing, try socks in synthetic blends that draw perspiration away from the foot. Do not wear cotton socks. Buy walking shoes that fit, and try on shoes with your walking socks on. Your heel should fit securely so that there is no excess movement. The front of the foot should be very flexible.
  • Stretch: Walkers should stretch for several minutes every few miles to avoid discomfort during the walk or the following day.
