Herbert Pardes, M.D., President and CEO of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and NewYork-Presbyterian Healthcare System, has been named to the National Commission on Systemic Interoperability. The Commission, authorized as part of the Medicare Modernization Act, has been charged by Congress with developing a strategic plan for the nation's health-care information technology infrastructure.
In the next year, the Commission will create a comprehensive plan for adopting and implementing technology standards to make health-care IT systems across the country work together. The plan, due to Congress by Oct. 31, 2005, will establish a timeline and priorities for offering technology tools to improve health-care safety, quality, and efficiency.
The development of interoperable information technology for the medicalcommunity will help unify the knowable information about a patient seeking treatment, saidDr. Pardes. When medical professionals have all the information they need,it helps to eliminate errors and provide better treatment for the patient. Thework of the Commission will do much to speed acceptance by the medical industryand find strategies for quick adoption.
Dr. Pardes is a recognized leader in the national movement to develop interoperable systems between and within hospitals.
