Judges awarded a total of $10,000 in prizes to the top three teams

NewYork-Presbyterian announced the winners of the InnovateNYP Pediatric Appathon, a 30-hour hackathon-style event in which designers, developers, clinicians and startups worked around the clock to develop tech advancements in pediatric healthcare.
Seventy-eight participants formed 17 teams and went to work after hearing presentations from the Family Advisory Councils of both the Komansky Center at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell and NewYork-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital. Each shared some of the unique challenges and scenarios that arise when providing care to pediatric patients and families. They inspired the developers to think of new technologies in the areas of discharge, wayfinding, real-time surveys and tracking care team members.
After two days of hacking and consulting side-by-side with hospital staff, teams presented their innovations to a judging panel of NewYork-Presbyterian leaders and New York tech influencers, including: Gilad Kuperman, director of interoperability informatics at NewYork-Presbyterian, Alba Roman, NewYork-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital Family Advisory Council member, Kanisha Dolsingh, honorary chair, Komansky Center Family Advisory Council, Kristy Sundjaja, chief of staff at LivePerson and Brad Weinberg, partner at Blueprint Health.
Judges evaluated the submissions based on their ease of use, design aesthetic, benefit to users, creativity, scalability with Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) and overall quality.
First place ($5,000 prize):
Team name: Kinder
Application name: “PIP”
The winning concept was an educational app for parents, designed to walk them through the stages of the care process while their child is hospitalized. It digitizes the 40-page patient and visitor guide book used across NewYork-Presbyterian campuses. Features include instructions for before, during and after surgery, dietary instructions for their child, information about medicine prescribed to their children and a guide to locations where parents can sleep overnight. The app pulls customized information directly from each patient's medical record. Team members were Rivelle Zlatopolsky, Natalie Kuehn, R. Stanley Hum, Michael Brenner, Matt Monteleone and Elizabeth Alfonso.
Second place ($3,000 prize):
Team name: My NYP Care Team
Application name: “Day by Day”
The app aims to empower families with information by giving them a snapshot of each day their child is in the hospital. Parents will be put at ease knowing who is on their child’s care team at all times. Tabs in the app allow parents to keep record of their child’s treatments, tests, conversations with physicians and personal notes. Team members were Sumeet Banker, Martin Li, Judith Dufault, Jonathan Chen, Gina Maman, Nele Jessel, Craig Limoli and Govin Vatsan.
Third place ($2,000 prize):
Team name: Merge Conflict
Application name: “Discharge app"
Using a barcode, the app takes discharge papers and makes them mobile. Parents can access details about their child’s diagnosis, appointment reminders, medication instructions (including actual photos of the medications) and a built-in contact feature to connect with the hospital care team after they get home. Team members were Shena Yoshida, Ferose Babu, Natalia Estrella, Henna Ahmed and Jamaal Sedayao.
“The judges and I were very impressed by the results participants were able to achieve in such a short period of time,” said Daniel Barchi, chief information officer at NewYork-Presbyterian. “Pediatrics is a field that presents a unique set of challenges and opportunities that can be addressed through innovative uses of mobile technology, and we are excited to see how teams will bring some of these ideas and solutions to life in the coming weeks.”
The weekend-long hackathon officially kicks off the 10-week Pediatric App Challenge in which participants, including some from the hackathon, will form teams and spend 10 weeks designing and developing a working application or game that uses technology to improve pediatric healthcare. Submissions are due May 20, 2016. Select finalists will be invited on June 9, 2016 to present their applications to a judging panel of healthcare influencers, and the top three winners will be awarded a total of $40,000 in prizes.
This year’s judges include leaders from NewYork-Presbyterian, NavHealth, Foursquare, 1776, and the City of New York. Ultimately, NewYork-Presbyterian will work with teams to refine their applications for implementation as part of the hospital’s continued effort to find new solutions to improve the patient experience.
