NEW YORK

NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital ranks first in the New York City metropolitan area and sixth in the nation, according to U.S. News Media Group's 2008 edition of America's Best Hospitals.

It is the eighth consecutive year that NewYork-Presbyterian is the only New York metropolitan-area hospital on the magazine's "Honor Roll," which lists the top 19 hospitals nationally based on reputation, mortality rates and other patient-care-related factors. This year also represents the fifth consecutive year the Hospital ranks among the top ten in the nation with Honor Roll points totaling 22, a one-point improvement over 2007.

NewYork-Presbyterian is listed with the highest possible score for advanced technologies and patient services in all 12 specialties where these categories apply. Examples of recent advances at the Hospital include the following:

  • Performed more organ transplants than any other hospital in the nation, including kidney, heart, lung, liver and pancreas.
  • One of the first hospitals in the nation to perform successful surgery without external incisions.
  • World's first successful use of deep brain stimulation for a minimally conscious patient.
  • World's first use of a 3D endoscope for brain surgery.
  • One of the first hospitals in the nation to perform successful catheter-based pulmonary valve replacements for treatment of congenital heart defects.

NewYork-Presbyterian ranks among the top five in five specialties, including Kidney Disease (#3); Psychiatry (#3); Endocrinology (#5); Neurology & Neurosurgery (#5); and Orthopedics (#5). The Hospital ranks among the top 10 in an additional four specialties, including Gynecology (#6); Heart & Heart Surgery (#6); Urology (#8); and Respiratory Disorders (#10). (The Hospital's rankings advanced in five of these nine specialties, compared with last year.)

Additional rankings include Gastrointestinal Disorders (#14); Geriatrics (#16); Rheumatology (#18); Ear, Nose & Throat (#21); Rehabilitation (#24); and Cancer (#35).

"We are very pleased to again be recognized as one of the outstanding institutions included in the list of 'America's Best Hospitals.' One key measure of a hospital's success is their commitment to caring for patients and their families with compassion and individual attention. Equally important is a focus on advancing innovative technologies and treatment options in every specialty," says Dr. Herbert Pardes, President and CEO of NewYork-Presbyterian. "NewYork-Presbyterian has achieved its goals through the dedication of our physicians, nurses, staff and employees, and through medical research that is made possible by our affiliation with two top-tier medical colleges — Weill Cornell Medical College and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons."

"This distinction is a tribute to the enthusiastic leadership and teamwork of NewYork-Presbyterian's health-care professionals — including over 16,000 employees, physicians and nurses — who every day demonstrate their commitment to putting our patients first," adds Dr. Steven J. Corwin, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of NewYork-Presbyterian.
