NewYork-Presbyterian has been recognized as one of the Top 10 Most Innovative Companies in Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the world by Fast Company. This selection is a part of Fast Company’s annual ranking of the world’s Most Innovative Companies for 2018, which honors leading enterprises that exemplify the best in business and innovation. NewYork-Presbyterian, chosen for its use of AI and telemedicine, competed among thousands of companies surveyed by Fast Company editors and reporters to earn a spot on the prestigious list.

“We are pleased to be recognized as a leader in artificial intelligence and telemedicine by Fast Company as we explore new ways to use technology to deliver even higher quality, more compassionate care to our patients,” said Dr. Steven J. Corwin, president and CEO of NewYork-Presbyterian. “Through innovation and technology, we hope to lower healthcare costs, elevate care and ultimately improve the lives of the people in the communities we serve.”

“At NewYork-Presbyterian, we believe in taking advantage of technology to enhance the exceptional care we provide our patients,” said Dr. Laura Forese, executive vice president and chief operating officer at NewYork-Presbyterian. “We are honored to be included on Fast Company’s list of the world’s most innovative companies as we continue to redefine the intersection of technology and healthcare.”

Artificial intelligence is used in NewYork-Presbyterian’s Clinical Operations Center (CLOC), a remote monitoring system and command center that connects clinical care programs throughout the healthcare system and provides support for the entire system. At CLOC, registered nurses can track physiologic data of patients in the emergency department in real time, as well as monitor the temperature of refrigerators that store lifesaving medicine.

CLOC also hosts the technical infrastructure of NYP OnDemand, a suite of telemedicine services designed to improve access to the hospital’s world-class care. These services, in collaboration with Weill Cornell Medicine and Columbia, allow patients to easily communicate with physicians from a mobile phone, tablet, computer, and even self-service kiosks at select Walgreens and Duane Reade stores throughout New York City.

Fast Company commended NYP OnDemand’s Express Care program for helping to reduce emergency department visit times from two or more hours to just 30 to 45 minutes, thanks to telemedicine. Other services include digital urgent care, where patients can access emergency medicine physicians through a live video chat; virtual visits, for pre and post follow up appointments with their doctor without travel to the office, and peer to peer consults between physicians.

“We are delighted to be named among the most innovative companies by Fast Company,” said Daniel Barchi, senior vice president and chief information officer at NewYork-Presbyterian. “This award is a testament to all the ways we use technology and artificial intelligence to put patients first and improve access to high-quality care.”
