NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital again has the most physicians listed in New York magazine's "Best Doctors" issue — the 10th straight year as #1.

The June 14–21 print issue of the magazine lists 186 NewYork-Presbyterian physicians, representing 17 percent of the 1,119 New York City–area doctors listed — an increase of 1 percentage point over last year. The magazine also lists 117 physicians affiliated with NewYork-Presbyterian Healthcare System (excluding NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital). Together, NewYork-Presbyterian and System hospitals account for 27 percent of all physicians listed.

Dr. Tomoaki Kato is one of eight physicians highlighted in a series of short articles called "My Toughest Case" published in print and online. Dr. Kato's story tells of his experience performing surgery on an abdominal tumor that involved removing and re-implanting the patient's organs.

Who Picks the "Best Doctors"?

According to New York magazine: "A New York City research and information company, Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., publishes an annual guidebook titled Top Doctors: New York Metro Area, which lists those whom Castle Connolly has determined to be in the top 10 percent of the region's physicians — more than 6,000 in all. For the past 13 years, Castle Connolly has been providing New York magazine with a shorter version of this list for the magazine's "Best Doctors" issue. Space prohibits New York from publishing the full list. Castle Connolly conducts a peer-review survey. The idea is that medical professionals are best qualified to judge other medical professionals (think of your doctor referring you to a specialist) — multiple recommendations are better. To select the doctors, the firm sends out 12,000 nomination forms to medical professionals in New York City, Westchester County, Long Island, and portions of New Jersey and Connecticut."
