NEW YORK

A supporter and champion of biomedical research, Dr. Herbert Pardes, executive vice chairman of the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital Board of Trustees, has established and endowed a prestigious award that will be presented annually to a physician-scientist whose research exemplifies the very best in scientific advancement and innovation.

The Herbert Pardes, M.D., Clinical Research Excellence Award will be the top prize bestowed by the Clinical Research Forum at its inaugural Top 10 Clinical Research Achievement Awards, which honors outstanding accomplishments in clinical research.

"The tripartite mission of excellence in research, medical education and patient care unites all scientists in academic medical settings in their pursuit of clinical research that will expand the boundaries of medicine; increase the ability to diagnose, treat and prevent disease; and offer patients and their families hope for the future," says Dr. Pardes, the former president and chief executive officer of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. "I am delighted to be able to advance this vitally important mission and support researchers as they pursue game-changing medical breakthroughs."

The Clinical Research Forum is an organization that comprises more than 50 of the nation's most prestigious and acclaimed academic health centers whose goal is to promote and support clinical research. Since its establishment in 1996, leading physicians have shared best practices in clinical research, discussed health care policy and played a national advocacy role in support of the needs of clinical research.

Last year, the Forum established the Top 10 Clinical Research Achievement Awards as a way to identify and recognize major scientific advances resulting from the nation's critical investment in research. The Forum accepted nominations for outstanding research projects that represent innovation, creativity and scientific advancement; contribute to the understanding of human disease and/or human physiology; and/or demonstrate impact on the prevention, diagnosis or treatment of disease.

The Herbert Pardes, M.D., Clinical Research Excellence Award, which also includes a cash prize, will be one of three prizes presented to physician-scientists. The Forum's Board of Directors has already identified the winners, who will be announced at the Clinical Research Forum Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner April 18-19 in Washington, D.C. Dr. Pardes, who is vice chairman of the Forum's board, recused himself from the review process.

Key investigators of the winning studies will participate in a news conference and present their work during the meeting. Study summaries will be included in the New England Journal of Medicine and presented to Congress as part of an effort to encourage continued investment in clinical research.
