Care for Stroke from a World-Class Team

If you or a loved one has a stroke, prompt and effective treatment is vital to prevent the death of brain tissue and to improve your chance of a successful recovery. NewYork-Presbyterian is a recognized leader in stroke treatment and research. Our multiple Stroke Centers were among the earliest programs to be designated through New York State as primary stroke centers.

  • Exceptional Experience: We treat one of the highest volumes of people with stroke (nearly 2,000 each year) in the world, and the highest in Manhattan. People treated for stroke at high-volume centers likes ours have the best rates of survival and recovery.
  • Nationally Ranked: Our neurology and neurosurgery departments consistently rank among the top five in the country, according to U.S. News and World Report.
  • Comprehensive Stroke Center: NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital is now certified by the Joint Commission as a Comprehensive Stroke Center, the highest level of stroke certification a hospital can receive. The Joint Commission’s gold seal is awarded to institutions that provide the most advanced stroke care to patients with exceptional, around-the-clock treatment. In order to receive this distinction, NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center have met all of the general eligibility requirements. There are only approximately 100 Joint Commission Comprehensive Stroke Centers around the country.

  • A Leading Center for Patient Transfers: Many patients who have had a stroke are transferred from other hospitals to our centers because we provide advanced care for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke that is not available in many other hospitals. Physicians wishing to transfer a patient may call 1-800-NYP-STAT (1-800-697-7828), 24/7, to arrange for a transfer.
  • Team Care: We have specially trained neurologists, neurosurgeons, neurocritical care specialists, and nurses onsite 24/7 who work together as a team to care for our stroke patients.
  • Advanced Treatment: We use the latest technologies to diagnose and treat strokes accurately and effectively, including specialized monitoring, medical therapies, and minimally invasive surgical treatments.
  • Neuro-ICUs: Our Neurological Intensive Care Units (Neuro-ICUs) provide monitoring around the clock and specialized treatment for our most critically ill patients. Our Neuro-ICUs are among the few in the world with dedicated scanners within each unit, enabling us to perform immediate imaging of the brain. We use specialized medical and surgical treatments to minimize immediate and delayed brain damage and maximize each patient’s chance for a full recovery.
  • Early Rehabilitation: Our Center for Stroke Rehabilitation integrates rehabilitation as early as possible, using state-of-the-art treatments not widely available at other centers in the New York metropolitan area.
  • Clinical Trials: Our investigators participate in national clinical trials to improve stroke care. Our patients may be able to participate in research studies evaluating new stroke treatments, stroke prevention efforts, and stroke recovery approaches. We also have access to many exciting clinical trials that other centers do not – benefitting patients who are not eligible for the more standard therapies.
