Cystic Fibrosis Center

Exceptional Care for Cystic Fibrosis

The multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, nutritionists, social workers, physical therapists, genetic counselors, and alternative medicine practitioners at the Sue and John L. Weinberg Cystic Fibrosis Center at NewYork-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital provide outstanding care for children and adolescents with cystic fibrosis (CF). The Weinberg Center is a New York State-approved referral center for cystic fibrosis screening in newborns, and is nationally accredited by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

  • A Team Approach: We work collaboratively with other specialists throughout the hospital to provide comprehensive care to children with CF, and are skilled at using the many tools now available to manage this complex condition. We understand the challenges of this disease, and will educate you and your child about the best ways to reduce its complications.
  • Personalized Therapy: As researchers identify new CF genes and develop new medications that target specific mutations to reduce or eliminate CF symptoms, treatment for the disease is becoming very individualized. While we continue to search for a cure, our goal is to provide the best, most comprehensive and compassionate care for children and adolescents with CF and their families.
  • Airway Clearance Support: Along with our colleagues in rehabilitation medicine, we provide traditional airway clearance and teach children and their families alternative techniques to clear the airways. We can also review your child's regimen on an outpatient basis and recommend ways to improve his or her airway clearance and overall conditioning.
  • Transitional Care: Treatments for CF are rapidly evolving and improving, and more and more children are surviving into adulthood with the disease. We collaborate with the Gunnar Esiason Adult Cystic Fibrosis and Lung Program at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center to ensure that our older CF patients make a smooth transition to adult healthcare services.
  • Pediatric Lung Transplantation: Some patients with advanced cystic fibrosis-related lung disease benefit from lung transplantation. We are home to the largest adult CF lung transplant program in New York City, and about 20 percent of the lung transplants we perform are in patients with CF. Our specialists are continually refining the patient selection criteria for this procedure, and we have expanded our program to include patients under the age of 18.
  • Advancing the Field through Research: To evaluate promising new therapies for cystic fibrosis, we direct and participate in a range of clinical studies. Your child may have an opportunity to participate in a clinical trial of a new therapy.
