Cardiomyopathy, Heart Failure and Transplantation

Personalized Care for Children with Weakened Hearts

The Center for Pediatric Cardiomyopathy, Heart Failure and Transplantation at NewYork-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital brings together the expertise of a wide range of pediatric heart specialists to care for your child. We have extensive experience taking care of children with complex congenital heart disease and severe heart disorders, such as cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure. We help you learn if you have looked at all possible treatment options before considering a heart transplant for your child. As a research center, we may be able to offer treatments for your child that are not available elsewhere.

  • Nationally Ranked: NewYork-Presbyterian is one of the country's leading centers for the care of young hearts. U.S.News & World Report has ranked our pediatric hospitals among the top pediatric cardiology and heart surgery programs in the country, reflecting our reputation and excellent surgical outcomes, the expertise of our surgical teams, our high volume of cases, and other data related to patient care.
  • A Team of Experts: Your child has access to all of the specialists needed to care for his or her heart, including pediatric cardiologists, pediatric heart surgeons, and other healthcare professionals with expertise in pediatric cardiology and heart transplantation. We collaborate to evaluate your child's needs and put together a customized plan of care. Our team approach has set the standard of care for children with end-stage heart failure, achieving an 84-percent overall long-term survival rate after hospital discharge.
  • Parents Are Team Members, Too: As a parent, only you can provide important information about how your child was doing before and after becoming ill. You can also help other members of the team shape your child's personalized treatment program based on your child's physical, emotional, and practical needs. Your input is critical for making final decisions regarding your child's care.
  • Comprehensive Treatment: We treat all types of cardiomyopathy - any disease in which the heart loses its ability to pump blood effectively, preventing the heart muscle from pumping enough blood to meet the body's needs. This includes dilated cardiomyopathy (the most common form), hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (abnormal enlargement of the heart's left ventricle or the wall between the two ventricles), and restrictive cardiomyopathy (a rare condition in which the heart muscle becomes stiff and cannot fully expand to allow enough blood to enter its lower chambers). Cardiomyopathy can lead to the development of congestive heart failure, a condition in which the heart is unable to pump enough blood to meet the body's needs for oxygen and nutrients.
  • A World-Class Pediatric Heart Transplant Program: Cardiomyopathy is the leading reason for heart transplantation in children. About one in five infants and children with cardiomyopathy that causes symptoms need a transplant within a year of diagnosis. We have one of the largest pediatric heart transplant programs in the United States and rank in the nation's top five centers for pediatric heart transplant. Our surgeons typically perform more than 25 transplants for pediatric and adult congenital heart disease each year - more than any other hospital in the country.
