Is there anything besides hysterectomy that can be done to stop the heavy periods I am having?
Yes; heavy menstrual periods can be controlled with a simple 15 minute office procedure. This procedure called endometrial ablation is relatively painless and is effective in eliminating or reducing menses for 95% of patients. Patients can return to normal activities within 48 hours.

Do I need to have major surgery to have my fibroids removed?
No; there are many new minimal access techniques for dealing with fibroids. Techniques such as Laparoscopic Myomectomy, Laparoscopic Myolysis, Endometrial Ablation, and Embolization can be used in many situations to control the problems that fibroids cause. In most situations, patients can be treated in the ambulatory setting and return to normal activities the next day.
