Diverticulosis and Diverticulitis
Diverticulosis and Diverticulitis involve the development of multiple sacs that project outward from the colon wall. These pouches are termed diverticula. When the pouches or their surrounding area become inflamed or if they rupture, this condition is called diverticulitis. Diverticulitis is most apt to occur in the lower, sigmoid colon. If diverticulitis becomes recurrent, surgical removal of the affected section of the colon at a time when no symptoms are present may be advised. Surgery may also be required if intravenous antibiotics are ineffective during an acute attack. In such acute situations a temporary colostomy may be performed with reattachment of the bowel at a later time.
