Dedicated Centers for Children in Need of Critical Brain and Spinal Care
When a child requires neurocritical care, it's a trying time for everyone in the family. The pediatric neurocritical care specialists at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital recognize this. We not only provide advanced lifesaving care to children in need, but support for parents and other family members during this challenging time. Children and families who come to us for neurocritical care benefit from:
Dedicated Pediatric Intensive Care Units: Three beds in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of NewYork-Presbyterian/Phyllis and David Komansky Center for Children's Health are dedicated to young patients in immediate need of intensive neurologic care, either due to trauma or disease or following complex neurosurgery. The pediatric intensive care unit of NewYork-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital provides care around the clock to infants, children, and adolescents with life-threatening neurological illnesses and injuries — as well as those recovering from major or high-risk neurosurgery. We treat children with any type of brain injury or illness, including traumatic brain or spinal injuries, status epilepticus, stroke, encephalitis, meningitis, and coma. Both units afford a level of surveillance and state-of-the-art monitoring that is unparalleled, giving children and adolescents the best chance of making a full recovery.
A Team of Experts: The care of critically ill children requires a team approach, one that brings together specialists with both the expertise to provide high-quality patient care and the compassion to help children and families during this difficult time. Each child receiving neurocritical care in our hospitals has access to the skills and experience of pediatric intensivists, neurosurgeons, neurologists, neuroradiologists, critical care nurses, respiratory therapists, rehabilitation teams, social workers, child life specialists, speech and occupational therapists, and dietitians. The healthcare team also has access to all of the various medical and surgical subspecialists who practice at NewYork-Presbyterian, ensuring that all of each child's medical needs can be addressed in one center.
Family-Centered Care: Parents are key participants on their child's health care team. We encourage them to spend as much time as possible at the bedside in the Pediatric ICU with their child and to participate actively in decision-making.
24/7 Patient Transfers: NYP STAT, a full-time transport system, is available to bring children to the Pediatric ICU from our network hospitals, other hospitals within the Tri-State area, and beyond. Physicians who wish to transfer a sick child from another hospital to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital need only call one convenient number, 1-800-NYP-STAT (1-800-697-7828), to reach the Transfer Center. They'll be greeted by a critical care nurse, who will put them in touch with an accepting physician, ensure a clean ready bed, and facilitate transportation arrangements if needed.
