Pediatric Digestive Surgery

Compassionate and Specialized Surgical Care

Children with a wide array of digestive conditions and disorders, ranging from appendicitis to more complex problems of the esophagus, liver, pancreas, stomach, and intestines to tumors, may require surgery to treat these conditions. Surgical specialists at NewYork-Presbyterian's two children’s hospitals offer a full range of general and advanced surgical services. Both hospitals are major referral centers for complex and rare digestive disorders in infants, children, and adolescents.

  • A Team of Specialists: Our pediatric surgery teams integrate the skills of specialists from a number of fields, including pediatric anesthesiologists, pediatric radiologists, pediatric gastroenterologists, neonatologists, perinatologists, and other surgical subspecialists. We strive to make your child's and your family's visit as easy and as comfortable as possible.
  • Newborn Specialty Care: Our pediatric surgeons collaborate with our perinatal centers to plan surgeries to correct neonatal (newborn) congenital abnormalities (birth defects). Our teams also work closely with neonatologists and critical care specialists to care for the most fragile infants.
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery: Whenever possible, our surgeons take a minimally invasive approach. We’re skilled in laparoscopy for complex digestive and hepatobiliary conditions in newborns and children. Among the advanced techniques we offer is essentially scarless surgery using "single incision pediatric endosurgery" (SIPES). Smaller incisions mean less discomfort after surgery and a quicker recovery for your child.
  • Repair of Anorectal Malformations: Our pediatric surgeons have particular expertise in correcting complex anorectal malformations, and we perform several advanced procedures that eliminate the need for a temporary colostomy.
  • Cancer Surgery: Our pediatric surgery teams are experts in the care of children with a variety of digestive cancers and liver and biliary cancers. We are applying the latest advances in diagnostics and treatments to dramatically improve the outlook for infants, children, and adolescents with cancer.
  • Emergency Surgery: Children who develop serious nutritional challenges often come to us as pediatric surgical emergencies. We collaborate with specialists in pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition, and, if needed, can perform intestinal transplantation surgery.
