The Division of Pediatric Endocrinology is pleased to announce a new program designed to help children manage their body weight. Session 1: What Are My Child’s Nutrition Requirements?
DATE: September 10, 2014, 5-6:30pm
This session is designed for children and families who want to learn more about nutrition requirements as related to weight management. Topics including calorie, fat, and carbohydrate requirements will be discussed. Children and families will understand their own personal individual recommendations. This is a hands-on class with demonstrations.
Session 2: Reading the Nutrition Label and Supermarket Shopping
DATE: September 17, 2014, 5-6:30pm
The focus of this session is to start applying the nutrition recommendations to your child’s lifestyle, culture, and food preferences. The interactive approach will teach your child how to read labels and make healthier selections while supermarket shopping. Both you and your family will be empowered as you understand the nutrition content of foods that are commonly consumed in your home.
Session 3: Healthy Cooking and Interactive Approach
DATE: Wednesday, October 1, 2014 from 5:00-6:30pm
Our group will start using our skills learned in previous sessions to create healthy meals and snacks. Using the knowledge of both natural and packaged foods our group will start the process of meal planning to create healthy diets that are aimed at weight reduction. Cooking techniques such as grilling and steaming will be demonstrated.
Session 4: Restaurant Dining and Fast Foods
DATE: Wednesday October 8, 2014 from 5:00-6:30pm
The session is designed to teach children and families how to eat healthy while dining out or selecting fast or convenience foods. Bring your favorite takeout restaurant menus! We are going to discover the secrets and tricks of dining out without all the added fats and calories!
Session 5: Children and Exercise Recommendations
DATE: Wednesday, October 22, 2014 from 5:00-6:30pm
This session features an exercise physiologist guest speaker who will review exercise recommendations for your child. Age-appropriate recommendations, health benefits, and practical tips will be provided to help you and your child start and maintain an active lifestyle.
Session 6: Healthy Snacks for Children and Teens
DATE: Wednesday, November 5, 2014 from 5:00-6:30pm
This session will be sure to give new ideas and concepts on healthy snacks. We will be using fun cooking tools, and tasting lots of healthy snacks that are loaded with vitamins and minerals, and are low in calories. We know kids love snacking… this session is not-to-be-missed!
Session 7: Using Technology for Weight Management
DATE: Wednesday, November 19, 2014 from 5:00-6:30pm
Designed for technology-savvy kids! This session, our staff encourages you to bring your smartphones, tablets, laptops, or any gadget you like. We are going to teach you how to use technology to help you better manage your weight and understand your nutrition intake.
Session 8: Does my Child Need a Vitamin and Mineral Supplement?
DATE: Wednesday, December 3, 2014 from 5:00-6:30pm
This session we will discuss how supplements play a role in maintaining good health. Emphasis will be on important vitamins and minerals such as Calcium, Iron, Vitamin D, and other important nutrients.
Session 9: Weight Reduction for the Vegetarian and Alternative Diet
DATE: Wednesday, December 10, 2014 from 5:00-6:30pm
This session expands on nutrition recommendations for children and families that for personal, medical or religious reasons follow alternative diets. Lactose-Free, Gluten-Free, Kosher, Vegan, Vegetarian and other alternative diets will be discussed, and our healthcare professionals will be available to answer your questions. Alternative diets easily work into weight management plans! Bring any food labels or products to share with our group.
Session 10: Losing Weight -- and Keeping It Off
DATE: To be determined
Our focus will be tips and tools for keeping off weight! Together we will share easy meal plans, motivational tools, exercise tips, and neighborhood resources for continued support. Our team of social workers, registered dietitians, and doctors will be there to answer any questions. Perhaps even a potluck snack will help us share everything we learned during our session!
