The Division of Pediatric Endocrinology is pleased to announce a new program designed to help children manage their body weight. Session 1: What Are My Child’s Nutrition Requirements?
This session is designed for children and families who want to learn more about nutrition requirements as related to weight management. Topics including calorie, fat, and carbohydrate requirements will be discussed. Children and families will understand their own personal individual recommendations. This is a hands-on class with demonstrations.

Session 2: Reading the Nutrition Label and Supermarket Shopping
The focus of this session is to start applying the nutrition recommendations to your child’s lifestyle, culture, and food preferences. The interactive approach will teach your child how to read labels and make healthier selections while supermarket shopping. Both you and your family will be empowered as you understand the nutrition content of foods that are commonly consumed in your home.

Session 3: Healthy Cooking and Interactive Approach
Our group will start using our skills learned in previous sessions to create healthy meals and snacks. Using the knowledge of both natural and packaged foods our group will start the process of meal planning to create healthy diets that are aimed at weight reduction. Cooking techniques such as grilling and steaming will be demonstrated.

Session 4: Restaurant Dining and Fast Foods
The session is designed to teach children and families how to eat healthy while dining out or selecting fast or convenience foods. Bring your favorite takeout restaurant menus! We are going to discover the secrets and tricks of dining out without all the added fats and calories!

Session 5: Children and Exercise Recommendations
This session features an exercise physiologist guest speaker who will review exercise recommendations for your child. Age-appropriate recommendations, health benefits, and practical tips will be provided to help you and your child start and maintain an active lifestyle.

Session 6: Healthy Snacks for Children and Teens
This session will be sure to give new ideas and concepts on healthy snacks. We will be using fun cooking tools, and tasting lots of healthy snacks that are loaded with vitamins and minerals, and are low in calories. We know kids love snacking… this session is not-to-be-missed!

Session 7: The Balanced Diet
This session focuses on assuring your child is meeting requirements for a balanced diet. Even if there are medical, cultural, or dietary restrictions, your child can achieve a balanced diet. Topics to be included will focus on adequate vitamin/mineral intake, special diets and creative meal planning to meet both macro and micronutrient recommendations.

Session 8: Staying Fit for the Future!
Our final session of the series explores technology, community resources and the principles of Healthy Weight management. We encourage you to bring your smartphones, tablets, laptops, or any gadget you like – we are going to use technology to help you better manage your weight and help you to understand your nutrition intake! Members of our medical team will be available to answer questions regarding medical and behavioral component keeping to healthy food choices.
