How We Diagnose and Treat Congenital Heart Disease

NewYork-Presbyterian offers comprehensive medical, surgical, and supportive care for people with congenital heart disease. Our services include the complete range of care, from diagnosis to treatment and follow-up, and include:

  • Echocardiography, heart MRI, and heart CT, which we use to diagnose and monitor heart disease.
  • Interventional cardiac catheterization, such as the insertion of a balloon (angioplasty) with or without a stent to open a narrowed heart artery. We also use interventional techniques to repair holes in the heart and damaged valves, and to treat some people with pulmonary hypertension (elevated blood pressure in the arteries to the lungs). Our interventional cardiologists have particular expertise treating adults with uncorrected congenital heart defects, including patent foramen ovale (PFO) and atrial septal defects.
  • Interventional electrophysiology, which we use to treat people with heart rhythm abnormalities.
  • Heart surgery, including complex repairs of congenital heart disorders. We perform minimally invasive heart surgery whenever possible. Our heart surgery programs are ranked among the top programs in the nation by U.S. News and World Report.
  • Heart transplantation, which we perform at NewYork-Presbyterian Columbia University Medical Center for people whose heart disorders can't be treated successfully using other methods.
