Dr. Joyce Yu

Joyce E. Yu, MD, FAAP, is the newest member of the Pediatric Allergy and Immunology practice at the family-centered NewYork-Presbyterian Phyllis and David Komansky Center for Children's Health. She joins our team as assistant attending pediatrician at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell and assistant professor of pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medical College. Board certified in Pediatrics and in Allergy and Immunology, Dr. Yu provides diagnostic and treatment services for a wide variety of pediatric allergic diseases and asthma, with a particular interest in the treatment of primary immunodeficiency diseases in children who have recurrent infections.

Dr. Yu has many personal connections to the field of medicine and to her particular specialty. She grew up in a family of physicians; her father is a surgeon and her grandfather a pediatrician. However, it was her own interest in science that drew her to the field of pediatric immunologic diseases, beginning with her undergraduate training at M.I.T. While there, she had the opportunity to conduct research with Hidde Ploegh, PhD, a well-known scientist and prominent immunologist. At M.I.T., Dr. Yu worked in the Ploegh lab examining the assembly and folding of MHC (major histocompatibility complex) Class I molecules, which are centrally involved in different mechanisms of the immune system, resulting in her co-authoring a paper for Nature. This further sparked her curiosity in basic science and translational immunology and eventually led her to focus on allergy and immunology as a medical specialty.

Dr. Yu pursued her medical degree at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. As a medical student, she researched the immunomodulatory mechanisms of a novel HMC (human mast cell) Class II-derived peptide and was awarded a one year research fellowship from the American Society of Nephrology. She then completed her general pediatrics residency at Children's Memorial Hospital of Northwestern University in Chicago. She returned to Mount Sinai School of Medicine for a fellowship in adult and pediatric allergy and immunology and two years of additional post-doctoral research in translational immunology with Charlotte Cunningham-Rundles MD, PhD, at the Mount Sinai Immunology Institute.

While at Mount Sinai, Dr. Yu helped to adapt the Primary Immunodeficiency Diseases Registry of the U.S. Immunodeficiency Network (USIDNET) to an Internet database; contributed to the development of a food allergy education pilot program for primary care physicians; and received the benefits of extensive training from clinicians and researchers in the Primary Immune Deficiency Program and the Jaffe Food Allergy Institute.
