Dr. Emile Bacha Joins Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital as Director of Congenital and Pediatric Cardiac Surgery

NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital is pleased to announce the appointment of Emile Bacha, MD, as Director of Congenital and Pediatric Cardiac Surgery. Dr. Bacha has developed novel techniques to perform hybrid surgical-interventional procedures for many complex congenital heart defects, including hypoplastic left heart syndrome, and specializes in minimally invasive approaches to pediatric cardiac surgery.

Dr. Bacha comes to the Department of Surgery from Harvard Medical School/Children's Hospital, Boston, where he was Associate Professor of Surgery and Senior Associate, Department of Cardiac Surgery. During 2000-2005, he was Director of Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery and Pediatrics at the University of Chicago/University of Chicago Hospitals, where he established a successful pediatric cardiac surgery program, including a minimally invasive surgery program.

Dr. Bacha received his MD degree in 1989 from Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich, Germany, where he went on to complete an internship and the first portion of his general surgery residency at the affiliated Klinikum Grosshadern University Hospital and German Heart Center. He completed his residency at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Boston (1991-93) and Emory School of Medicine Affiliated Hospitals in Atlanta (1993-95). Dr. Bacha was a research fellow at Hospital Marie-Lannelongue in Paris, and completed his cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital and Children's Hospital/Harvard Medical School in 1998.

Dr. Bacha's research interests include hybrid pediatric cardiac surgical/interventional procedures, human factors in surgical care, and patient safety.
