Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders

In people with functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs), the digestive tract looks normal, but may not work as it should. You may experience a variety of symptoms ranging from nausea, vomiting, and belching to pain, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea. At NewYork-Presbyterian, we understand how much these disorders, such as dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome, can impair your quality of life. We offer a full range of tests needed to assess the function of your digestive tract. Armed with the results, we can put together a team of experts to help you start feeling better.

Comprehensive Digestive Function Testing

Often, functional GI disorders can be diagnosed simply by the- doctor listening carefully to your story. Other times, they may explain the need to perform further tests to exclude other causes or to further clarify your intestinal function. These tests may include:

  • Physical examination
  • Blood and urine tests
  • Examination of the stool
  • Colonoscopy (insertion of a flexible scope to see inside the colon)
  • Upper Endoscopy (insertion of a flexible scope to see inside the esophagus, stomach and small intestine)
  • Abdominal imaging tests, such as x-rays and ultrasound
  • Breath tests for malabsorption or bacterial overgrowth
  • Specific motility tests for different parts of the GI tract

Treating Functional GI Disorders

Once we know what is causing your symptoms, we tailor a plan of treatment to help you feel more comfortable.

  • Nutritional counseling. A registered dietitian will work with you to create a diet containing foods that may help you feel better and let you know about any foods you should avoid.
  • Medications. Some functional GI problems can be treated with medications that reduce acid production, ease intestinal spasms, regulate the motility of the digestive tract or treat pain at the nerve level. Our doctors match you with the medication best suited for your care.
  • Stress management. Stress worsens many digestive symptoms. NewYork-Presbyterian offers stress management and lifestyle optimization services through our Integrative Health and Well-being program. Our therapies can help to promote relaxation, reduce stress and anxiety, and relieve your symptoms.
