Knee Replacement Designed Specifically for Women

Surgeons at NewYork-Presbyterian Columbia Orthopedics are now offering a knee replacement designed specifically for women. The knee has a more natural angle, thinner profile and contoured shape that better matches a woman's own knee, creating a better fit and significantly reducing feelings of "bulkiness" or pain caused when implants overhang the natural bone and press on ligaments or tendons.

Surgeons see the female replacement knee as a significant improvement over traditional knee replacements which came in different sizes, but did not take into consideration whether the patient was a man or woman. Interestingly, women undergo nearly two thirds of the more than 400,000 knee replacement surgeries in the US each year, and surgeons feel that more female patients would consider the procedure if better fitting knee replacements could offer better results.
