Domestic and Other Violence Emergencies (DOVE)

Volunteer Advocate Program

You can make a difference!

DOVE advocates assist survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence in the emergency rooms of several NewYork Presbyterian hospitals (Columbia Medical Center, Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, and Lower Manhattan Hospital). Advocates volunteer their time and energy to ensure survivors' voices are heard, safety is assured, other immediate needs are met, and appropriate linkages to essential resources are established.

DOVE advocates are first-responders and can play a vital role and make a difference in the lives of survivors, family members, and friends in the immediate aftermath of the trauma.

Who can become a DOVE advocate?

Our advocates are at least 21 years of age and all racial and ethnic backgrounds. They all share a commitment in wanting to address the needs of survivors and their families during their most vulnerable moments.

DOVE advocates must be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a strong commitment to supporting survivors of interpersonal violence.
  2. Reach the emergency room of their respective program within 60 minutes.
  3. Complete a free 40-hour training course.
  4. Comply with medical clearance standards.
  5. Be on-call for at least two shifts per month.
  6. Make a one-year commitment to the program.

We need you!

To further explore the rewards of joining the DOVE team as a volunteer and making a difference in the lives of survivors of sexual and domestic violence, please reach out to the program closest to you from the list below.
