For Physicians

Advanced medical therapies available at the Center for Acute Respiratory Failure at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center include:

  • ECMO (veno-venous and veno-arterial)
  • Pulmonary Embolectomy
  • Lung-protective ventilator strategies
  • Advanced ventilator modalities
    • High-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV)
    • Airway pressure-release ventilation (APRV)
    • Other advanced modes of ventilation
  • Inhaled vasodilator therapy
    • Inhaled prostacyclin
    • Inhaled nitric oxide

Lung transplantation is not typically an option in the acute setting. However, a small number of patients may be candidates for a lung transplant evaluation if they have a chronic underlying lung disease and meet other well-defined criteria, including the ability to participate in the evaluation process.
