At NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, teams of specialists in hematology manage a wide range of congenital and acquired blood disorders, such as anemias, neutropenias, thrombocytopenias and thrombocytosis, and coagulation disorders, through disease-specific programs and centers and access to the latest therapies. Bone marrow transplantation has opened new horizons for treatment and, through the work pioneered by the Hospital's physicians, is giving hope for a cure to patients with sickle cell disease as well as those with thalassemia.
The Hospital's Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center — one of just ten centers in the country supported by the National Institutes of Health — offers diagnosis and genetic counseling for families affected by this hereditary blood disease. Physicians at the Hospital screen patients for stroke and other potential complications of sickle cell disease and provide treatment for those at risk. In cooperation with St. Luke's/Roosevelt Harlem Hospital and Mount Sinai Hospital, the Center cares for over 1000 patients.
The Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center offers comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services for patients with blood diseases. Our Platelet Disorder Center is the national leader for care of immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) — a skin rash resulting from bleeding into the skin — and attracts patients from all over the United States and Canada. Other special programs in the Division include the Center for Lymphoma and Myeloma for patients with lymphoma, Hodgkin's Disease, and multiple myeloma, as well as the Program in Leukemia for patients with acute and chronic leukemias, myelodysplastic and myeloproliferative syndromes, and bone marrow failure syndromes.
In combination with other specialties, the Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology provides even more special programs, such as the Comprehensive Hemophilia Center (with Department of Pediatrics), the Vascular Biology Center (with Divisions of Vascular Surgery, Interventional Radiology, Cardiology, Hypertension, and Diabetology).
